Hello Again

I am excited to be able to put together another blog under the heading of Mind’s Eye, so a big thank you to everyone who replied to my request for your favourite, most memorable character. I have really enjoyed reading your replies and collating them for everyone to enjoy. So without more ado..............

Nicola

Hi, what an interesting article and such a ’Desert Island disc’ moment to choose one favourite. I seem to acquire long lists but in the spirit of your request I choose......

ree

Count Alexander Rostov from the wonderful book, A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles.

Set in 1922 in Moscow the Count is arrested as an Aristocrat and sentenced to imprisonment inside the Metropole hotel. As a man who had never worked and suddenly finds himself encountering one experience after another he gradually develops an understanding what it is to have purpose. I disliked the character at first but grew to love him as he reflected and changed his view of others and himself. I choose this character as it seems so very pertinent for me to adapt to a post Brexit, climate aware environment where tolerance, kindness and understanding seems so important. Thanks Nicola

Mr Bean - Rowan Atkinson, Richard Curtis,Robin Driscoll,Paul Weiland

Mr Bean makes me laugh and I really want to watch more of him.

Julia

Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau - Blake Edwards

On a more serious note:-

There are so many characters that I have found it difficult to identify one favourite.

Frank McCourt - Angela's Ashes

This novel made such a memorable impression on me. His life was tough because the husband drinks his wages, so the family are starving. Whilst reading this novel I thought life for these poor Irish people can’t get worse ……. but it does.

Brian Keenan - An Evil Cradling

Terry Waite - Taken on Trust

Neither know what will happen to them and their endurance is amazing.

Emma

Winnie the Pooh - AA Milne

He is simple and loveable, kind and caring. He loves his friends and will do anything to help them. Although he is rather preoccupied with his own needs (mainly hunny!) a lot of the time. Everybody should have a friend like Pooh. Plus he is just so cute.

Garry

Tin Tin - Herge

He is adventurous. He can fly a plane, drive a car, fix anything and he solves mysteries, nothing phases him at all. In fact he is an all round Good Egg. He appeals to my inner child and spirit of adventure.

Hus

Phil Dunphy from Modern Family - various writers

I like him because he is a family man and would do anything for them (like me). He is also very funny. One of the funniest characters I have ever seen.

Harris (age 6)

ree

Horrid Henry - Francesca Simon

I like him because he is cheeky and naughty. (Not like me!)

Zoe

ree

Pantalaimon - Northern Lights - Philip Pullman

He can be whoever he wants whenever he wants. I admire the freedom he has and his ability to adapt to any situation.

Maddie

ree

Lee - East of Eden - John Steinbeck

He is incredibly intelligent and is able to have frank conversations about the racism he faces in day to day life, due to the time at which the novel is set.

Pippa

ree

Bucky Barnes - Captain America - various writers

He is such a strong character who survived years of brainwashing to become the underdog hero. Which shows how anything is possible when you set your mind to it.

Robin Hood - various authors

I am a romantic at heart I guess but I really like the idea of someone being out there looking after those in greatest need. 'Stealing from the rich to give to the poor'. Standing strong against the elite. Living in an English Forest surrounded by his Merry Men, outwitting the baddies and naturally finding true love in Maid Marion. Well I did say I was a romantic. Although the wrinkly green tights of the 50's and 60's did nothing for his image, I did quite fancy Jason Connery back in the 90's in Robin of Sherwood though.

...........

I find it fascinating where we find inspiration in people, real or fictional, and whose experiences touch a part of us that we somehow relate to, no matter how different our lives have been from theirs.

Bye for now Caroline
